Parsons Brinckerhoff and Firstco to design transport communications system for London’s Crossrail project

14th January 2010

Parsons Brinckerhoff, the international engineering consultant, has been awarded a contract to design the transport communications system for London’s Crossrail project.

The task facing Parsons Brinckerhoff now is to bring together all the disparate elements of technology that will eventually allow the smooth running of all operational and non operational communications. The technology deployed will be well proven, tried and tested.

The complex project will ensure that all systems - including separate radio network systems for each emergency service, rail and underground operators and the general public - will operate effectively at any point along the 21 kilometre Crossrail tunnel which runs under the heart of London.

“A key challenge on the project will be interfacing with the existing communications networks of London Underground, Network Rail and the train operators to the east and west of Crossrail,” explains Andy Titley, PB’s Crossrail package manager. “We also need to work very closely with the multitude of other contractors and designers involved on Crossrail to ensure we achieve a fully integrated design solution.”

Working with design consultant, Firstco, PB now has a team of engineering specialists working on the complex network. Installation will start in 2014 with completion and final commissioning linking up with the opening of Crossrail in 2017.
