Heathrow Airport, power reinforcement project (new 33kV bulk supply point and 11kV substation)

The project required the delivery of new 33kV supplies to Heathrow’s Central Terminal Area so that power could be released for the construction activities of an airside road tunnel to new aircraft stands on the Western end of the Airport.

As part of the reinforcement, dual 33kV supplies were to be brought in by the Regional Electricity Company to a new 33kV Bulk Supply Point on the northern side of the airport. Provision was to be made within the Bulk Supply Point for future reconfiguration of the airport’s HV circuits, including safeguarding for developments such as for additional Terminal capacity.

From the BSP, two diverse routed 33kV supplies would be run (under the operational northern runway) to a new 33/11kV substation located airside in the Central Terminal Area. Phase 2 of the project included the transfer of supplies from the existing intake substations to the new substation.

Firstco’s brief was to project manage the work undertaken by the Regional Electricity Company off-airport, the construction and commissioning of the new Bulk Supply Point and the construction and commissioning of the new 33/11kV substation.

Firstco assembled the delivery team and reported to the Head of Engineering.
